1. Compatible Equipment & Applications The governor actuator is a precision control device primarily used on high-end commercial, industrial, and recreational power generation systems. It is widely found on:
2. System Location & Function This actuator mounts directly to the engine's throttle body or fuel injection pump linkage. It acts as the mechanical "muscle" for the electronic governor controller. Based on signals from the control board, it physically pushes or pulls the throttle mechanism to keep the engine spinning at exactly the right speed (1,800 RPM or 3,000/ 3,600 RPM) to ensure stable voltage and AC frequency (50Hz or 60Hz) under shifting electrical loads. |
The Onan ACTUATOR-GOV is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) high-precision electronic governor actuator. It acts as the mechanical muscle for the generator's speed management system, ensuring the engine spins at a constant rate regardless of electrical demand.

1. What is it? This part is an electromagnetic rotary linear actuator. Unlike standard vehicles where human feet press a mechanical gas pedal to change speeds, a generator must run autonomously. The governor actuator receives electrical pulses from the digital control board and instantly adjusts the physical fuel delivery system. 2. Core Functions

Signs of Faulty
|
1. Extreme Engine Speed Fluctuation ("Hunting" or "Surging") The most classic sign of a failing actuator is engine surging. Instead of running at a smooth, constant hum, the engine will rev up high, drop low, and continuously cycle up and down. This happens because the actuator's internal windings or shaft are sticking, causing it to over-correct or lag behind the control signals. 2. Fluctuating AC Voltage and Frequency Because AC frequency (50Hz or 60Hz) is directly tied to engine RPM, an unstable actuator will cause your onboard appliances, lights, and electronics to behave erratically. You will notice lights flickering wildly, and sensitive electronic equipment (like laptops or microwaves) may shut down or throw error codes due to voltage sags and spikes. 3. Engine Stalls Immediately When a Load is Applied When a heavy electrical load (such as an RV air conditioner) turns on, the engine naturally experiences mechanical resistance and slows down. A healthy actuator instantly pulls the throttle open to compensate. If the actuator is dead or weak, it cannot react, and the sudden load will immediately stall the engine. 4. Engine Overspeed Shutdowns If the actuator gets stuck in the fully open position or its internal return spring breaks, the engine may rapidly rev up to dangerously high RPMs upon startup. The generator's control board will sense this unsafe overspeed condition and instantly shut the engine down to prevent catastrophic alternator or valve train damage. 5. Generator Starts, Cranks, but Will Not Stay Running If the actuator is electrically shorted or completely dead, it will fail to move the fuel rack or throttle plate to the required "run" position during startup. The engine might fire up briefly using residual fuel or starter fluid, but it will immediately die because the actuator cannot maintain the mechanical throttle opening. |
