Vehicle Fitment

1. Compatible Engine Families

This exhaust brake assembly is engineered specifically for Cummins medium-duty, high-torque diesel platforms. It is widely used on:

  • Cummins ISB Series (5.9L and 6.7L) Inline-6 turbo diesel engines.

  • Cummins ISC Series (8.3L) and select QSB industrial variants used in high-capacity mobile platforms.

2. Common Vehicle Types & Applications

Because it is designed to manage the kinetic energy of heavy vehicles descending steep grades, this part is commonly fitted to the following applications:

  • Luxury Class A Motorhomes & Diesel Pushers: High-end recreational vehicles built on Freightliner, Spartan, or custom chassis powered by Cummins ISB/ISC engines, where heavy braking is required without overheating the service brakes.

  • Medium-Duty Trucks & Haulers: Flatbeds, dump trucks, and commercial tow vehicles (like the Freightliner M2 or older RAM 4500/5500 chassis using specialized auxiliary exhaust retarding configurations).

  • Specialty Heavy Utility Vehicles: Mobile command centers, large fire apparatuses, and commercial transport buses built on Cummins-powered vocational chassis.

The Onan Exhaust Brake is an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) supplemental vehicle retarding system engineered by Jacobs Vehicle Systems in partnership with Cummins.

1. What is it?

Often referred to simply as an "E-Brake" or "Jake Brake," this cast iron assembly mounts directly downstream of the engine's turbocharger exhaust outlet. It acts as an auxiliary slowing system for medium-duty trucks and heavy vehicles, working entirely through engine backpressure.

2. Core Functions

  • Exhaust Throttling Resistance: When activated by the driver, a heavy internal butterfly flap rotates shut inside the housing. This severely restricts the escaping exhaust gases, creating a pocket of high backpressure pushing against the rising pistons. This pneumatic resistance slows down the crankshaft rotation, translating into substantial vehicle braking horsepower.

  • Service Brake Preservation: By utilizing the engine's air pressure to control speeds on steep, mountain descents, it relieves the vehicle's standard drum/disc service brakes. This eliminates the risk of dangerous brake fade, overheating, or friction pad glaze.

  • Thermal Management: On modern layouts, the system can selectively close the exhaust throttle during cold idles to increase engine load, allowing the vehicle to reach proper operating temperatures faster and reducing emissions output

Signs of Faulty

1. Weak or Completely Missing Braking Force

The most common symptom is a noticeable lack of vehicle retardation when descending steep grades. If you flip the dashboard toggle switch and the vehicle does not slow down on its own, the internal butterfly valve may be stuck wide open, or the air cylinder actuator may have lost pressure supply.

2. Sluggish Acceleration or Severe Loss of Engine Power

If the internal valve becomes carbon-fouled and jams in the closed or partially closed position, it continuously chokes the engine's exhaust stream during normal driving. This causes massive, unintended exhaust backpressure, resulting in a dramatic drop in turbo boost, sluggish acceleration, and a feeling that the vehicle is "fighting itself."

3. Audible Air Hissing or Exhaust Leaks

The actuator cylinder relies on positive air pressure to manipulate the internal valve linkage. If an internal seal ruptures or the external supply line cracks, you will hear a distinct air-hissing sound when the system engages. Additionally, a warped exhaust brake housing can cause exhaust gases to blow past the mounting flanges, producing a loud ticking or whistling noise in the engine bay.

4. "Stuck" Switch or Delay in Disengagement

When you tap the accelerator pedal, the exhaust brake should immediately snap open to clear the exhaust path. If the return spring inside the actuator is broken or the mechanical linkage is binding due to road salt and rust, the brake will stay applied too long, causing a violent jerking sensation or delayed acceleration when trying to speed up.

5. Excessive Exhaust Smoke or High EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temperatures)

A partially seized valve forces the engine to work much harder to push spent air out of the cylinders. This restriction disrupts the clean air-to-fuel ratio, spiking your Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) to dangerous levels and producing noticeable black smoke under standard highway cruising conditions.
