Technical Specifications

  • Weight: Approximately 45 – 55 lbs (20 – 25 kg) for the filter core alone.

  • Material: Usually high-grade Cordierite or Silicon Carbide with a stainless steel canister.

  • Hardware: Requires two heavy-duty V-band clamps and two high-temperature gaskets for installation.

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) 1827310PEX is a critical exhaust component found on heavy-duty 15-liter Cummins ISX/X15 and 13-liter PACCAR MX-13 engines. It is a "wall-flow" filter designed to capture and store 99% of particulate matter (soot) produced during the combustion process.

  • The Soot Trap: Unlike a standard muffler or a catalyst, the DPF has blocked channels (honeycomb structure) that force exhaust gases through porous walls, physically trapping the black carbon soot inside.

  • Cleaning Cycles (Regeneration): As the filter fills up, the engine performs a "Regen." It injects fuel into the exhaust to raise the temperature and burn the stored soot into a tiny amount of ash.

  • Serviceable Component: While soot can be burned off, the remaining ash cannot. This means the DPF must be removed and professionally cleaned or replaced every 250,000 to 400,000 miles, depending on duty cycle and oil consumption.

  • Compatibility: Because PACCAR (Kenworth/Peterbilt) often uses both Cummins and MX engines, the DPF "can" for these platforms is often standardized in size, allowing the same filter core to fit multiple engine brands.

Signs of Faulty 1827310PEX:

  • Persistent "DPF Full" Dashboard Alerts: If the truck requests a parked regeneration shortly after completing one, the filter is likely "ash-loaded." Ash takes up physical space that soot normally occupies, making the filter fill up almost instantly.

  • Face Plugging or "Soot Face": Upon inspection, if the inlet side of the DPF is covered in a thick, black, oily layer of soot, the filter is "face-plugged." This is often caused by a faulty EGR valve or turbocharger leaking oil.

  • Engine Derate and Power Loss: The ECM monitors the pressure drop across the DPF. If the pressure is too high, the engine will limit RPM and torque (Derate) to prevent internal engine damage.

  • Cracked or "Melted" Substrate: If you see black soot inside the exhaust tailpipe or on the outlet side of the DPF, the internal ceramic core is cracked. A healthy DPF should have a perfectly clean white or grey outlet face.

  • Excessive Fuel Consumption: Frequent regenerations use a significant amount of extra diesel. If your MPG (miles per gallon) drops suddenly, the DPF may be struggling to stay clean.

  • Fault Codes:

    • Cummins: Code 1921, 1922 (Soot level high).

    • PACCAR: P1496 (DPF restricted), P1495 (DPF regeneration disabled).
