Functions: 
Temperature control: Maintains optimal engine operating temperature by controlling coolant flow.   
Warming up: When the engine is cold, the thermostat remains closed, directing coolant through a smaller circuit to quickly warm up the engine.   
Cooling down: Once the engine reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens, allowing coolant to circulate through the radiator for cooling.   

This thermostat is important for maintaining the engine at the optimum operating temperature by regulating the flow of coolant.
