The Anti-Lock Brake (ABS) Module is the central Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) responsible for operating active braking, stability control, and traction control systems on full-size General Motors vans (GMC Savana and Chevrolet Express).

1. What is it?

The module is an onboard microprocessor unit mounted onto the hydraulic brake assembly. It continuously reads input signals from wheel speed sensors on all four corners of the vehicle to prevent wheel lockup, loss of traction, and lateral skidding during emergency braking or low-friction road conditions.

2. Integrated Safety Systems

This module directly manages three key vehicle safety programs:

  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): Rapidly modulates brake fluid pressure to individual wheels to keep tires rolling and steering functional during sudden stops.

  • StabiliTrak® (Electronic Stability Control): Monitors vehicle trajectory and selectively applies braking to individual wheels to help regain control during a skid.

  • Traction Control System (TCS): Regulates engine output and applies braking force to slipping wheels when accelerating on wet, icy, or loose surfaces.

Signs of Faulty

1. Cluster Warning Lights & Service Messages

The most immediate sign of failure is the persistent illumination of dashboard warning lights:

  • ABS Warning Light stays lit continuously.

  • Traction Control / StabiliTrak Light remains turned on.

  • Driver Information Center (DIC) messages such as "Service StabiliTrak", "Service Traction Control", or "Service Brake System".

2. Specific Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

Connecting a professional diagnostic scanner will output chassis and communication error codes:

  • C0265 / C0550: Internal Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) circuit or relay fault.

  • C0035 – C0050: Wheel speed sensor circuit fault codes (often caused by cracked internal solder joints on the EBCM circuit board rather than bad sensors).

  • U0121: Lost Communication with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module.

3. Continuous ABS Pump Running (Drain on Battery)

A short-circuited transistor or stuck relay on the internal circuit board causes the ABS hydraulic pump motor to run continuously—even with the ignition off and key removed. This will completely drain the vehicle's battery overnight.

4. Complete Loss of Anti-Lock Braking (Wheel Lockup)

When the module enters failure mode, the brake system defaults to standard mechanical hydraulics. Under emergency stopping conditions or on wet/snowy roads, the ABS will not trigger, causing the wheels to lock up, skid, and flat-spot the tires.

5. Spongy, Unresponsive, or Erratic Brake Pedal Action

Failure of internal electronic solenoid valve drivers can disrupt hydraulic pressure delivery. This can cause a soft or "spongy" brake pedal feel, or trigger false ABS pedal chatter during light braking on dry roads.
