The ABS Control Module is an OEM Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) designed for heavy-duty Chevrolet Express 4500 and GMC Savana 4500 commercial trucks.

1. What is it?

The module acts as the "brain" of the Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC). Mounted directly onto the hydraulic brake assembly, it constantly reads input signals from the wheel speed sensors on all four wheels to determine whether a wheel is locking up during braking.

2. Core Functions & Features

  • Active Skid Prevention: When sudden braking occurs on slippery or loose surfaces, it rapidly commands the internal valves and pump within the hydraulic manifold to pulse hydraulic pressure to individual wheels, preventing wheel lockup and maintaining steering control.

  • Traction Control & Stability Integration: Works in conjunction with the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) to apply selective braking force when tire slip or loss of vehicle control is detected.

  • Factory GM Equipment: Made as a direct-fit replacement to original GM standards for proper CAN-bus network communication and long-term durability.

Signs of Faulty

1. Illuminated Dashboard Warning Lights

The most common indicator is the permanent illumination of the ABS Light, Traction Control (TC/StabiliTrak) Light, or a warning message like "Service Brake System" or "Service StabiliTrak" on the driver information center.

2. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

When scanned with an OBD-II diagnostic tool, a failing module will typically store specific C-series brake codes, such as:

  • C0035 – C0050: Wheel speed sensor circuit errors (often caused by internal module circuit board failure rather than the sensor itself).

  • C0550 / C0265: Internal EBCM control unit failure or pump motor circuit malfunction.

  • U0121: Lost communication with Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module.

3. Wheel Lockup During Hard Braking

If the module fails internally while driving, the ABS system will deactivate, dropping back to standard hydraulic brakes. Under sudden or heavy braking, the wheels may lock up completely, causing skid marks, flat-spotted tires, and loss of steering control on slick surfaces.

4. Unresponsive or Unpredictable Brake Pedal

Internal electrical or valve driver shorts inside the module can cause unusual pedal behavior, such as a spongy pedal, erratic ABS pump cycling when slowing down under normal conditions, or an unusually stiff pedal requirement.

5. Continuous ABS Pump Running (Battery Drain)

A short-circuited relay or internal transistor inside the module can keep the ABS hydraulic pump motor running continuously—even when the engine is turned off and the key is removed. This quickly drains the vehicle's battery.
