An engine intake manifold is the part of the engine that delivers air evenly to each cylinder so the engine can produce power. On older gasoline engines, it carried the air-fuel mixture; on modern gasoline and diesel engines, it usually carries only air.

  • Distributes air evenly
It splits the incoming air into separate passages (called runners) so each cylinder gets a similar amount of air.
  • Improves engine performance
Even airflow helps the engine produce more power and torque while running smoothly.
  • Supports fuel efficiency
Proper airflow helps the engine burn fuel more efficiently, reducing wasted fuel.
  • Works with the turbocharger (on turbocharged engines)
In engines like the Detroit Diesel Series 60, the intake manifold carries compressed air from the turbocharger to all the cylinders. More air allows the engine to burn more fuel and generate more power.
  • Provides mounting points
The intake manifold often has connections for components such as:
    • Intake air temperature sensor
    • Boost pressure (MAP) sensor
    • Intake heater (on some engines)
    • EGR components (on certain engines)

Signs of Faulty:

  • Loss of engine power
    • The engine feels sluggish, especially when accelerating or pulling a heavy load.
  • Reduced fuel economy
    • The engine may burn more fuel because it isn't getting the correct amount of air.
  • Air or boost leaks
    • On turbocharged diesel engines such as the Detroit Diesel Series 60, a cracked manifold or leaking gasket lets compressed air escape, reducing boost pressure.
  • Hissing or whistling noise
    • A noticeable hissing sound around the intake manifold often indicates an air leak.
  • Check engine light
    • Modern engines may set fault codes related to boost pressure, airflow, or intake air sensors.
  • Rough idle or rough running
    • More common on gasoline engines, but diesel engines can also run unevenly if there is a significant intake leak.
  • Black exhaust smoke (diesel)
    • A boost leak can reduce the air available for combustion, causing incomplete fuel burning and black smoke from the exhaust.
  • Poor turbo performance
    • The turbocharger may not be able to build or maintain the expected boost pressure.
