Vehicle Fitment

  • Cummins® Engine Platforms: C8.3, 6CT 8.3, 6CTA 8.3, 6CTAA 8.3, and early ISC 8.3L mechanical/electronic diesel engines.

  • Commercial & Heavy-Duty Trucks: Freightliner®, International®/Navistar®, Kenworth®, Peterbilt®, and Volvo® medium/heavy-duty vocational trucks.

  • Buses & Transit Equipment: IC Bus®, Thomas Built Buses®, and Blue Bird® commercial transit/school buses.

  • Construction & Agricultural Machinery: Case IH®, New Holland®, Hyundai®, and Komatsu® heavy excavators, wheel loaders, combines, and agricultural tractors.

The Engine Camshaft is a precision-machined, forged alloy steel mechanical timing shaft engineered for Cummins® 8.3L C-Series (6CT / 6CTA / 6CTAA) and early ISC diesel engines.

1. What is it?

Part is the primary rotational timing spine located inside the engine block. Driven directly by the crankshaft timing gear, it translates rotational force into precise linear motion using precision-ground lobes to open and close intake/exhaust valves and actuate mechanical fuel injectors (on mechanical C-Series engines).

2. Core Functions & Technical Features

  • Precision Valve Timing: Synchronizes intake air delivery and exhaust gas evacuation for all 6 cylinders, maintaining optimal volumetric efficiency.

  • Fuel Injection Actuation: Features specialized lobes engineered to drive mechanical unit injectors (where applicable), delivering precise high-pressure fuel timing.

  • Induction-Hardened Steel Construction: Precision-ground from forged steel with heat-treated lobe surfaces to resist extreme contact fatigue, galling, and high spring loads.

  • Cam Bearing Support: Features ground journal surfaces designed to run inside replaceable engine block camshaft bushings with continuous pressurized oil lubrication.

Signs of Faulty

1. Loud Valvetrain Ticking, Clicking, or Metal Tapping Noise

  • Symptom: A rhythmic, high-pitched metallic tapping or ticking sound coming from under the valve cover or upper cylinder head that increases speed with engine RPM.

  • Cause: Worn or pitted camshaft lobes creating excessive clearance between the lobe surface and the roller lifter/tappet.

2. Engine Misfire, Loss of Power, and Rough Idling

  • Symptom: The engine stutters, lacks pulling power under load, or runs unevenly at idle speed.

  • Cause: Flat or worn camshaft lobes failing to lift intake or exhaust valves to their full opening height, restricting cylinder airflow.

3. Excessive Black or Blue Smoke in Exhaust

  • Symptom: Constant unburned fuel smoke (black) or oil smoke (blue) exiting the exhaust pipe during acceleration.

  • Cause: Incomplete combustion caused by altered valve timing and improper cylinder air intake/exhaust scavenge cycles.

4. Low Engine Oil Pressure or Metallic Debris in Filter

  • Symptom: Engine oil pressure gauge reads lower than normal, or fine metallic flakes (shimmer) appear in the oil pan/filter during an oil change.

  • Cause: Severe wear on camshaft journal surfaces and worn cam bushings allowing oil pressure to bleed off across the bearings.
