The Oil Pressure Sensor is an OEM engine protection component designed for heavy-duty Cummins® diesel engines.

1. What is it?

Part is a high-precision pressure transducer installed directly into the engine's main oil gallery. It measures internal oil lubrication pressure and converts mechanical hydraulic force into a proportional analog voltage signal sent to the Engine Control Module (ECM).

2. Core Functions & Technical Features

  • Engine Protection Monitoring: Continuously tracks engine oil pressure to safeguard internal components (crankshaft, bearings, pistons, and camshafts) against oil starvation.

  • Automatic ECM Shutdown Signals: Triggers active fault codes, warning lights, or automated engine shutdown features if lubrication pressure drops below safe operating limits.

  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Built with a brass/metal threaded base (1/4"-18 NPT) to resist extreme engine temperatures, vibration, and hot diesel engine oil degradation.

  • 3-Pin Weatherproof Connector: Features a sealed 3-pin electrical interface (5V reference, signal ground, and output signal) to ensure reliable signal transmission in harsh engine bay environments.

Signs of Faulty

1. False Low Oil Pressure Warnings or Gauge Dropping to Zero

  • Symptom: The dashboard oil pressure gauge drops to zero or fluctuates wildly while driving, triggering a loud warning chime or red "STOP ENGINE" light, even though the engine has adequate oil.

  • Cause: Internal electrical resistance breakdown, worn transducer element, or signal drift inside the sensor.

2. Automatic Engine Derate or Protection Shutdown

  • Symptom: The Cummins® ECM suddenly cuts engine horsepower (derate) or shuts the engine off completely after 30 seconds of idling/driving.

  • Cause: The ECM receives a false low oil pressure signal from the failing 3408607 sensor and activates the automatic engine protection protocol to prevent mechanical failure.

3. Active Diagnostic Fault Codes (DTCs)

  • Symptom: Yellow "CHECK ENGINE" light illuminates on the dash with specific fault codes stored in the ECM.

  • Common Fault Codes:

    • Fault Code 135 / 141: Engine Oil Rifle Pressure Sensor Circuit - Voltage Above Normal or Shorted to High Source.

    • Fault Code 143: Engine Oil Rifle Pressure - Data Valid but Below Normal Operational Range (Severe Level).

4. Oil Leaking Through the Sensor Connector

  • Symptom: Wet oil presence inside the 3-pin electrical harness plug or oil dripping directly from the sensor body onto the side of the engine block.

  • Cause: Internal sensor seal degradation allowing pressurized oil to push through the internal diaphragm into the electrical connector housing.
