A DEF Injection Tube is a component in a diesel engine's SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) emissions system. It carries and introduces Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) into the exhaust stream so harmful emissions can be reduced.

 

1. Delivers DEF into the Exhaust Stream

  • Receives DEF from the dosing/injection system.
  • Directs DEF into the hot exhaust gases.
  • Ensures DEF enters the exhaust at the proper location.

2. Promotes Proper Mixing

  • Helps DEF mix evenly with exhaust gases.
  • Allows the DEF to vaporize and break down into ammonia.
  • Improves the efficiency of the SCR system.

3. Supports Emissions Reduction

  • Provides the ammonia needed by the SCR catalyst.
  • Helps convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water vapor.
  • Enables compliance with emissions regulations.

4. Protects SCR System Performance

Signs of Faulty:

 

1. Check Engine Light / Emissions Warning

  • SCR or “aftertreatment” warning appears on dashboard.
  • Fault codes related to DEF dosing or SCR efficiency.

2. Engine Derate (Reduced Power)

  • Vehicle loses power or speed is limited.
  • Happens when the system detects poor emissions control.

3. Poor SCR Efficiency Codes

  • Faults such as:
    • “SCR efficiency below threshold”
    • “NOx conversion low”
    • “DEF dosing performance issue”

4. DEF Crystallization Build-Up

  • White, chalky deposits around:
