A Collision Avoidance Control Module (CACM) is an electronic computer in a vehicle that helps detect potential collisions and warn the driver or assist with braking.

 
  • Detect vehicles ahead: Uses radar and other sensors to monitor traffic.
  • Measure distance and speed: Determines how quickly the truck is approaching another vehicle.
  • Warn the driver: Provides visual and/or audible warnings when a collision risk is detected.
  • Assist with braking: In systems that support collision mitigation, it can request or trigger braking when a crash is imminent.
  • Reduce accident severity: If a collision cannot be avoided, automatic braking may reduce the truck's speed before impact.
  • Improve driver safety: Gives the driver an additional layer of protection, especially on highways and during sudden traffic slowdowns.


Signs of Faulty:

 
  • Collision avoidance system warning appears on the dashboard.
  • “Radar unavailable,” “Collision Mitigation System Fault,” or similar warning appears.
  • Adaptive cruise control stops working or becomes unavailable.
  • Forward collision warnings don't work when they should.
  • Automatic emergency braking/collision mitigation becomes disabled.
  • The system works intermittently—sometimes available and sometimes not.
  • Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) related to the radar, collision mitigation, CAN communication, or control module.
  • A diagnostic scan tool cannot communicate with the collision avoidance module.
  • The radar sensor appears to be working and has proper power/communication, but the system still reports a module fault.
  • The module may show internal communication or internal electronic faults.
