An oil filter housing (also called an oil filter head or oil filter cooler housing) is the engine component that the oil filter attaches to. It's much more than just a mounting bracket—it directs engine oil through the filter and, on many diesel engines, through an oil cooler.

  • Mounts the oil filter
    • It provides a secure, leak-free place for the oil filter to attach.
  • Directs oil flow
    • Oil from the oil pump enters the housing.
    • The housing routes the oil through the filter.
    • Clean oil then flows back into the engine to lubricate bearings, pistons, camshafts, the turbocharger, and other components.
  • Maintains oil pressure
    • The housing is designed to handle the engine's oil pressure and helps ensure oil is delivered where it's needed.
  • Supports the oil cooler
    • On many heavy-duty diesel engines, such as the Cummins ISX/X15, the housing is integrated with or connected to the oil cooler, which helps regulate oil temperature.
  • Contains valves
    • Many oil filter housings include:
      • A bypass valve, which allows oil to continue flowing if the filter becomes clogged.
      • An anti-drainback feature, which helps keep oil in the system after the engine is shut off, reducing wear during startup.
  • Provides sensor ports
    • It often has threaded ports for oil pressure or oil temperature sensors.

Signs of Faulty:

  • Oil leaks
    • Oil dripping under the engine.
    • Oil around the oil filter or housing.
    • Oil collecting on the engine block or frame.
  • Low oil pressure
    • Oil pressure warning light comes on.
    • Oil pressure gauge reads lower than normal.
    • This can happen if the housing cracks or a seal fails.
  • Engine overheating
    • If the housing is integrated with an oil cooler and the cooler isn't working properly, oil temperatures can rise.
  • Oil mixed with coolant (on engines with an integrated oil cooler)
    • Milky oil.
    • Oily residue in the coolant reservoir.
    • This may indicate a failed oil cooler rather than the housing itself, but they're often serviced together.
  • Dirty engine compartment
    • Oil sprayed around the engine due to a pressurized leak.
  • Burning oil smell
    • Oil leaking onto hot exhaust components can produce a strong burning odor or even smoke.
  • Engine noises
    • Knocking, ticking, or rattling caused by low oil pressure.
    • This is a serious warning sign because it means engine parts may not be receiving enough lubrication.
