The Outlet Catalyst Module is an essential downstream aftertreatment component housing the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Ammonia Oxidation (AMOX) catalyst substrates inside Cummins Single-Module™ emissions systems.

 

1. What is it?

Part is the secondary (exit) chamber of the aftertreatment system fitted to Cummins heavy-duty diesel engines. Positioned downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) doser, it uses precious metal catalyst substrates to convert harmful oxides of nitrogen (NOx) into harmless nitrogen gas (N2) and water vapor (H2O).

2. Core Functions & Features

  • Final NOx Reduction: Receives exhaust gas mixed with vaporized DEF (ammonia) and facilitates the chemical reaction across the SCR catalyst bricks to break down up to 95%+ of tailpipe NOx.

  • Ammonia Slip Control (AMOX): Includes an integrated Ammonia Oxidation Catalyst stage at the outlet end to capture and neutralize any unreacted ammonia (NH3) before it exits the tailpipe.

  • Flow & Sensor Bosses: Equipped with factory-welded ports for exhaust temperature sensors and downstream NOx sensors to allow the Engine Control Module (ECM) to monitor conversion efficiency in real time.

  • Durable Stainless Shell: Constructed with high-grade stainless steel to resist thermal distortion, road de-icing chemicals, and extreme vibration.

 

Signs of Faulty

 

1. Active Aftertreatment Fault Codes & Check Engine Light

  • Symptom: MIL or Stop Engine light illuminated with active fault codes: FC3582 / FC3547 (Aftertreatment 1 SCR Conversion Efficiency Low) or FC2771 (Aftertreatment 1 Outlet NOx Sensor High).

  • Cause: The internal SCR substrate has lost catalytic reactivity or suffered thermal damage, preventing it from reducing NOx to acceptable EPA limits.

2. Induce / Derate Speed & Torque Restrictions

  • Symptom: The truck enters progressive engine derate (e.g., 5mph speed limit or 25% torque reduction) after prolonged warning periods.

  • Cause: The Engine Control Module (ECM) triggers regulatory derates when NOx emissions stay elevated above legal thresholds due to SCR failure.

3. DEF Crystallization & Face-Plugging

  • Symptom: Excessive exhaust backpressure, engine sluggishness, or fault code FC3575 (SCR Catalyst Intake Face Plugging).

  • Cause: Unburned Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF/AdBlue) deposits accumulate on the front face of the catalyst brick, blocking exhaust passage.

4. Excessive DEF Consumption Without Efficiency Gains

  • Symptom: The vehicle consumes DEF fluid at a much higher rate, yet NOx efficiency warnings remain active.

  • Cause: Chemical degradation or oil/coolant contamination of the catalyst washcoat prevents the chemical reaction even when DEF is injected correctly.

5. Physical Internal Rattling or External Exhaust Leaks

  • Symptom: Metallic clunking noises inside the canister when idling, or black soot marks leaking around the V-band clamp flanges.

  • Cause: Broken internal substrate matting causing the ceramic brick to fracture, or warped stainless steel sealing surfaces.
