Description: DPF Diesel Particulate Filter
Condition: New
Brand: Cummins®
Part Number: 5579357, 5579357RX

Vehicle Fitment 5579357:

 1. Engine Series Compatibility

Cummins DPFs are primarily categorized by the engine platform they support:

  • Light-Duty (6.7L Turbo Diesel): Found in RAM 2500/3500 pickup trucks (note: these often use Chrysler-specific part numbers).

  • Medium-Duty (ISB 6.7 / ISC 8.3 / ISL 9): Used in delivery trucks, school buses, and vocational vehicles.

  • Heavy-Duty (ISX12 / ISX15 / X15): Used in Class 8 line-haul trucks.

2. Common Vehicle Applications

  • Class 8 Trucks: Freightliner Cascadia, Kenworth T680/W900, Peterbilt 579/389, International LoneStar/LT Series, and Volvo/Mack (when equipped with Cummins engines).

  • Vocational/Utility: Dump trucks, cement mixers, and refuse trucks from Autocar, Western Star, and Mack.

  • Buses: Blue Bird, Thomas Built, and MCI/Prevost motorcoaches.

3. Critical Fitment Factors

To ensure correct fitment, you must verify:

  • The "Service Part Number": Located on the DPF nameplate (e.g., 5297989, 4353270).

  • Gasket & Clamp Type: Fitment isn't just about the filter; it requires matching V-band clamps and high-temp gaskets.

  • Emissions Level: A DPF for an EPA10 engine may not fit or function correctly on an EPA13 or Stage V engine.

A Cummins Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) 5579357 is a sophisticated exhaust filtration device designed to meet strict environmental regulations by capturing and storing soot (unburnt fuel and oil) from the engine's exhaust.

How it Works: The DPF is located downstream of the Catalyst Module. As exhaust gases pass through the filter's ceramic honeycomb structure, the soot is trapped in the walls of the filter. Periodically, the system performs a process called "Regeneration," where the exhaust temperature is raised to burn off the trapped soot, converting it into a small amount of ash.

Key Components:

  • Ceramic Substrate: A porous wall-flow monolith (usually made of cordierite or silicon carbide) that physically blocks soot.

  • Sensor Ports: These monitor the "Differential Pressure." If the pressure is too high, the engine knows the filter is full and needs cleaning.

  • Metal Housing: A durable stainless steel canister designed to withstand extreme thermal expansion.

Maintenance: Unlike a standard muffler, a DPF requires maintenance. Over time, non-combustible ash builds up, which cannot be burned off. This requires the filter to be removed and professionally cleaned (baked and blown) or replaced.

Signs of Faulty 5579357:

 1. Frequent Regeneration Cycles

The most common symptom is a "Regen" light that turns on more often than usual. If the filter is full of ash (which cannot be burned off) rather than soot, the system will try to regenerate repeatedly but fail to clear the blockage.

2. Engine Derate and "Limp Mode"

To prevent engine damage, the ECM (Engine Control Module) will reduce power and RPMs when it detects excessive backpressure. You may experience a significant loss of horsepower and a limited top speed.

3. Poor Fuel Economy

A clogged DPF forces the engine to work harder to push exhaust through the restriction. Additionally, frequent active regenerations consume a large amount of extra diesel fuel to create the necessary heat.

4. Fault Codes and Warning Lights

Watch for Cummins-specific codes such as:

  • FC1921 / FC1922: DPF Differential Pressure highly above normal.

  • FC2639: Frequent regeneration detected.

  • Stop Engine Light: Indicates a critical soot level that requires immediate service to avoid a fire hazard or engine failure.

5. Exhaust Smells or Visible Smoke

If the internal ceramic substrate is cracked (a "melted" or "blown" DPF), you may see black smoke coming from the tailpipe, which should never happen with a functional DPF. You may also smell a strong "burning" odor during failed regen attempts.
