A brake master cylinder is the main hydraulic component of a vehicle's braking system. It converts the force from pressing the brake pedal into hydraulic pressure, which is then sent through the brake lines to apply the brakes at each wheel.

 
  • Converts pedal force into hydraulic pressure: When you press the brake pedal, the master cylinder pressurizes the brake fluid.
  • Distributes brake fluid: It sends pressurized brake fluid through the brake lines to the brake calipers or wheel cylinders at each wheel.
  • Provides reliable braking: It ensures consistent braking performance every time you press the pedal.
  • Operates dual brake circuits: Most modern master cylinders have two separate hydraulic circuits. If one circuit fails, the other can still provide partial braking for added safety.
  • Maintains brake fluid pressure: It helps deliver the correct amount of pressure based on how hard the driver presses the brake pedal.


Signs of Faulty:

 
  • Soft or spongy brake pedal – The pedal feels mushy or sinks farther than normal before the brakes engage.
  • Brake pedal slowly sinks to the floor – If you're stopped and holding the pedal, it gradually drops without additional pressure. This is a classic sign of an internal leak in the master cylinder.
  • Reduced braking power – The vehicle takes longer to stop or requires more pedal effort.
  • Brake warning light – The brake warning light may come on if the fluid level drops or the system detects a problem.
  • Brake fluid leaks – Fluid may leak from the rear of the master cylinder where it connects to the brake booster, or you may notice fluid under the vehicle.
  • Low brake fluid with no obvious external leaks – A failing master cylinder can leak internally into the brake booster, making the fluid level drop without visible puddles.
  • Uneven braking – In some cases, one brake circuit may not build pressure properly, causing inconsistent braking.
