Compatible Engines & Drives

Part number is designed for marine applications featuring power-assisted steering systems:

  • MerCruiser Alpha One® (Gen II) & Bravo® Series Drives: Bravo One, Bravo Two, Bravo Three sterndrives.

  • MerCruiser Gas Engines: 3.0L, 4.3L V6, 5.0L V8, 5.7L (350 MAG), 6.2L, 7.4L, and 8.2L MAG engines equipped with hydraulic power steering.

  • MerCruiser Diesel Engines: Select QSD, CMD, and D-Tronic marine diesel platforms.

  • Mercury Inboards: Select inboard gasoline and diesel engines with transom-mounted steering actuator hardware.

The Power Steering Cylinder Assembly is an OEM hydraulic actuator mounted inside the boat's transom assembly. It transforms hydraulic pressure from the engine's power steering pump into mechanical force to turn the outdrive or rudder effortlessly.

1. What is it?

Part 8M0063382 is a heavy-duty hydraulic cylinder (steering actuator) that mounts on the inner transom plate of MerCruiser sterndrive engines. It links the mechanical steering cable coming from the helm to the outdrive's steering arm, acting as the power-assist interface for the vessel.

2. Core Functions & Features

  • Hydraulic Power Assist: Uses pressurized hydraulic fluid from the power steering pump to reduce steering effort at the wheel, especially during tight maneuvers or at high speeds.

  • Absorbs Propeller Torque: Neutralizes feedback forces generated by the spinning propeller (propeller torque steer) so the helm stays stable and smooth.

  • Cable-to-Hydraulic Conversion: Features an integrated control valve spool that senses movement from the manual mechanical steering cable and immediately directs hydraulic pressure to move the outdrive in the desired direction.

  • Corrosion Protection: Built with marine-grade materials and seals designed to withstand harsh marine environments (both freshwater and saltwater).

Signs of Faulty

1. Heavy or Stiff Steering Wheel Effort

  • Symptom: The steering wheel becomes extremely hard to turn, particularly at low speeds or when idling into a slip, feeling as if the boat lacks power steering entirely.

  • Cause: Internal piston seals are torn or bypass fluid, preventing hydraulic pressure from building up inside the cylinder chambers.

2. Hydraulic Fluid Leaking into the Engine Bilge

  • Symptom: Bright red or clear power steering fluid pools under the inner transom plate or drips down the steering ram. You may also notice fluid levels dropping rapidly in the power steering pump reservoir.

  • Cause: Blown rod seals, corroded cylinder shafts, or failed high-pressure hydraulic hose connections at the cylinder body.

3. Excessive "Wander" or Loose Steering Play (Slop)

  • Symptom: The boat strays off course, requiring constant steering correction at the helm, or there is noticeable free-play in the outdrive before the boat responds.

  • Cause: Mechanical wear in the cylinder’s internal spool control valve, worn guide bushings, or play in the cable coupler attachment pin.

4. "Jerky" or Hesitant Steering Response

  • Symptom: The outdrive stutters, vibrates, or catches abruptly when turning the steering wheel from side to side under acceleration.

  • Cause: Air trapped in the hydraulic circuit due to seal failure, or sticky control valve shuttle movement inside the actuator head.

5. Strong "Propeller Torque" Pull to One Side

  • Symptom: The helm forcefully pulls in one direction when cruising, requiring constant physical force to keep the boat running straight.

  • Cause: The internal directional spool valve inside the cylinder assembly has failed or is binding, causing uneven hydraulic assistance to one side.

Manufacturer information
Mercury Marine is a marine engine division of Brunswick Corporation headquartered in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. The main product line is outboard engines. It also produces the MerCruiser line of sterndrives and inboard engines. Some manufacturing is in Fond du Lac, while 40-60 HP engines are made in China. Smaller engines are Tohatsus that have been rebadged.
