The Inlet Catalyst Module A055J297 also known as the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), is the critical first stage of the "Single Module™" aftertreatment system used on large-bore Cummins engines like the X15, ISX15, and QSX15.

The "Furnace" of the System: Its most important job for the 15-liter engine is to generate extreme heat. During a regeneration cycle, the engine's 7th injector (hydrocarbon doser) sprays fuel into the exhaust. This fuel "burns" inside the DOC, raising temperatures to over 550°C (1,000°F) to clean the DPF.

EPA17 Efficiency: For the EPA17 standard, these modules are designed to be more compact yet more efficient at converting Nitrogen Oxide (NO) into Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), which helps the downstream SCR system reduce smog-forming emissions.

Signs of Faulty A055J297:

Regeneration Failure / Low Temp Faults: If the catalyst is "deactivated" or "poisoned" (from oil or coolant), it cannot reach the temperatures required to burn soot. You will see Fault Code 3167 or 1691, and the vehicle will fail to complete a stationary (parked) regeneration.

Rapid DPF Soot Loading: Because the DOC isn't helping with "passive" regeneration, the DPF fills up with soot much faster than normal, leading to frequent "Regen Required" dashboard alerts.

Face Plugging (Soot Buildup): If you remove the pipe and look at the inlet, you may see a thick layer of soot covering the honeycomb. This is often caused by a leaking 7th injector (Hydrocarbon Doser) or excessive idling.

Blue/White Smoke During Regen: If the DOC is weak, it won't fully "cook" the diesel sprayed into the exhaust. This unburnt fuel turns into thick white or blue-white smoke exiting the tailpipe during a regeneration cycle.

Progressive Engine Derate: As the module becomes restricted, backpressure increases. The ECM will eventually limit engine torque and speed to prevent turbocharger failure.

Thermal Damage (Melted Core): In extreme cases of "upstream" fuel leaks, the DOC can experience an uncontrolled temperature spike, causing the internal substrate to melt or crack.
