• Hydraulic Pump (ABS Pump):

  • Repressurizes brake fluid after it’s released by the valves.

  • Ensures the system maintains the necessary brake pressure.

• Solenoid Valves:

  • Open and close to control brake fluid flow to each wheel.

  • Each wheel has its own set of valves for precise control.

• Accumulator (in some designs):

  • Stores pressurized fluid temporarily to stabilize pressure changes.

• Brake Fluid Channels and Ports:

  • Direct the flow of hydraulic fluid between the master cylinder, pump, and brakes.

1. ABS Warning Light or Brake Light On

• The first and most obvious symptom.

• The vehicle’s dashboard will show an “ABS” or “Brake” warning light when the control system detects pressure, valve, or pump issues in the hydraulic unit.

• Sometimes, the Traction Control or Stability Control lights also come on because they share the same system.

2. Spongy, Hard, or Unresponsive Brake Pedal

• If the hydraulic valves or pump aren’t working properly, brake pressure can’t be modulated correctly.

• The brake pedal might feel:

  • Soft or spongy (air or fluid leak in the hydraulic block)

  • Hard or stiff (stuck solenoid valves or pump failure)

  • Unresponsive (pressure not building up properly)

3. Brake Fluid Leaks

• The hydraulic unit manages high-pressure brake fluid.

• If seals or internal lines fail, you may see leaking fluid near the ABS module or pump area, leading to low fluid levels and reduced braking power.

4. Increased Stopping Distance

• When the ABS hydraulic unit fails to modulate pressure, the system can’t prevent wheel lock-up or skidding effectively.

• This often results in longer braking distances, especially on wet or slippery roads.

5. Unusual Noises During Braking

• The ABS pump normally makes a brief buzzing or clicking sound during activation.

• If you hear constant buzzing, grinding, or no noise at all when ABS should engage, the hydraulic unit’s pump motor or valves may be failing.

6. Brakes Locking Up or Pulsating Erratically

• If a valve inside the hydraulic unit sticks open or closed, the system might:

  • Lock a wheel unexpectedly, or

  • Pulse the brakes even under normal braking conditions.

7. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

• Mechanics can detect specific fault codes (e.g., C0110, C0265, C1214, etc.) indicating pump motor, valve, or pressure circuit failures.

• These codes help pinpoint whether the problem lies in the hydraulic unit or the control module.
