  • Houses valves (intake and exhaust): The cylinder head has openings for intake and exhaust valves. 
    
  • Provides a surface for the head gasket: The head gasket creates a tight seal between the cylinder head and the engine block. 
    
  • Contains coolant passages: Channels machined within the cylinder head allow engine coolant to circulate and absorb heat from the combustion chambers and engine block. 
    
  • Houses the combustion chambers: The cylinder head contains cylindrical cavities called combustion chambers where the air-fuel mixture is ignited. Each cylinder in the engine has its own combustion chamber.
