• When an engine burns fuel, high combustion temperatures cause nitrogen (N₂) and oxygen (O₂) in the air to combine into nitrogen oxides (NOx).

• NOx gases contribute to air pollution, smog, and acid rain.

• The EGR valve helps prevent this by recirculating some exhaust gases back into the intake.

• This dilutes the air-fuel mixture and lowers combustion temperature, so less NOx is produced.

1. Rough Idle or Stalling

• If the EGR valve sticks open, too much exhaust gas enters the intake when it shouldn’t.

• This causes the air-fuel mixture to become unstable at idle → engine may shake, idle roughly, or stall.

 2. Engine Knocking or Pinging

• If the EGR valve sticks closed, no exhaust gas recirculates.

• Combustion temperatures rise, leading to spark knock (pinging) or detonation, especially under load or acceleration.

3. Check Engine Light (CEL)

• The ECU (engine control unit) monitors the EGR system.

• If it detects that the EGR flow is too low, too high, or erratic, it will trigger the Check Engine Light.

• Common EGR-related codes include P0400–P0409.

4. Poor Fuel Economy

• A malfunctioning EGR valve can mess up the engine’s air-fuel ratio.

• The ECU may compensate by adding more fuel → reduced fuel efficiency.
