1. Compatible Engine Families This precision puller tool is engineered explicitly for medium- and heavy-duty Cummins diesel engines. It is a mandatory workshop tool used to safely press or pull the camshaft gear off the nose of the camshaft without warping the gear or scratching the engine block face. It primarily services:
2. Target Equipment & Vehicle Integration Because these specific engine families are highly versatile, this diagnostic and repair tool is essential for servicing the following applications:
The Onan CAM GEAR REMOVER is a professional-grade, original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specialty hydraulic or mechanical service tool. It is engineered exclusively to pull the camshaft gear safely from medium-duty diesel engines.
1. What is it? This is not a replacement vehicle part, but a specialized workshop tool. On Cummins diesel engines, the camshaft gear is press-fitted onto the camshaft nose with immense mechanical force to ensure it never slips. Because there is no clearance behind the gear for a standard jawed puller, this custom tool bolts directly into the pre-machined holes on the gear face to draw it off smoothly. 2. Core Functions

Signs of Faulty
1. Stripped, Flattened, or Shiny Forcing Screw Threads The central forcing screw handles the brunt of the mechanical pressure. If the threads become flattened, cross-threaded, or show bright silver metal shavings (stripped), the screw is failing. A compromised thread can suddenly slip under load, causing a dangerous kinetic release or chewing up the threads inside the adapter plate. 2. Warped, Bent, or Dished Main Flange Plate The thick steel bridge plate must remain perfectly flat to apply even drawing pressure. Over time, or due to using an unapproved impact gun, the steel can undergo plastic deformation. If the plate looks slightly bowed or "dished" when held against a straightedge, it will pull the gear at an angle, causing the gear to bind on the camshaft nose or fracture the gear teeth. 3. Hairline Fractures or Cracks in the Casting Under extreme loads, hardened tool steel can develop microscopic hairline stress cracks, particularly around the central forcing bolt hole or the outer mounting slots. Inspect the tool regularly. Any visible line that catches a fingernail means the metal structural integrity is gone; continuing to use it can cause the tool to violently shatter into fragments under pressure. 4. Elongated or Out-of-Round Mounting Holes The adapter bolts secure the tool directly into the cam gear face. If these mounting holes have become stretched, ovaled, or egg-shaped from previous misaligned extractions, the bolts will sit loose. This shifting prevents the puller from centering correctly over the camshaft nose, leading to uneven pulling force and damage to the crankshaft/camshaft alignment. 5. Damaged, Bent, or Coroded Adapter Mandrels / Hardware The high-tensile specialty shoulder bolts and central nose adapter caps are designed to protect the engine's internal threads. If the tip of the pusher mandrel is mushrooms, bent, or heavily pitted with rust, it will slip off the center of the camshaft nose, permanently scoring the machined face of the engine components. |
