Vehicle Fitment

1. Compatible Vehicles

This specific kit primarily services four-wheel-drive (4WD) and all-wheel-drive (AWD) mid-to-full-size SUVs and pickup trucks from the Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge family. It fits the following vehicle production lines:

  • Jeep Grand Cherokee (WJ / WK Series): Select model years spanning from 1999 to 2010 (most notably front driveshaft positions).

  • Jeep Commander (XK Series): Production years 2006 to 2010.

  • Dodge Durango & Dodge Dakota: 4WD configurations spanning select years between 2000 and 2011.

  • Mitsubishi Raider: Selected 4WD models (built on the shared Dodge Dakota chassis architecture).

2. Position on the Vehicle

  • Front Driveshaft (At Transfer Case Location): This kit is most frequently used to repair the rear-facing CV joint of the front driveshaft (where the shaft hooks directly into the transfer case output flange). It is exposed to severe operating angles, making it a high-wear component.

The Driveshaft CV Joint Kit is a premium, complete aftermarket drivetrain service kit designed to restore smooth rotational power transfer to a vehicle's propeller shaft.

1. What is it?

When a factory driveshaft CV joint fails, dealerships typically force you to buy a completely new, expensive driveshaft assembly. Dorman engineered this kit as a direct-fit solution, allowing technicians to replace only the failed constant velocity joint itself, saving significant parts and repair costs.

2. Core Functions

  • Vibration-Free Rotation: It uses an internal precision-ground housing, inner cage, and hardened steel ball bearings to transfer torque from the transmission/transfer case to the differential without any rotational speed variation.

  • Angled Operation Accommodation: It allows the driveshaft to smoothly flex and change operating angles seamlessly as the vehicle’s suspension reacts to changes in the road terrain.

  • Environmental Sealing: The kit includes a heavy-duty, flexible rubber boot and a high-strength metal end cap designed to seal in the specialized high-temperature CV grease while keeping road grime, water, and salt out of the bearing tracks.

3. Kit Contents

A brand new kit contains everything required for a professional rebuild: the pre-assembled CV joint housing, rubber boot, securing snap rings, mounting bolts, a gasket seal, and a tube of specialized high-performance grease.

Signs of Faulty

1. Intense Drivetrain Vibrations Under Acceleration

The most common sign of a failing driveshaft CV joint is a heavy, rhythmic vibration felt through the floorboards or center console. This shaking typically intensifies as the vehicle accelerates or climbs a steep hill, caused by the internal steel balls wearing deep grooves into the inner cage track, which unbalances the spinning shaft.

2. Loud Metallic Clicking, Clunking, or Popping Noises

If you shift the transmission from Park into Reverse or Drive and hear a sharp "clunk" sound, it indicates excessive mechanical play inside the CV joint. Additionally, a steady, rapid metallic clicking or popping noise while traveling at highway speeds points to heavily worn internal ball bearings sliding unevenly inside their housing.

3. Grease Splattered Across the Vehicle's Undercarriage

If the flexible rubber boot splits, cracks, or loses its securing clamp, the high-speed centrifugal force of the rotating driveshaft will sling the thick internal CV grease out of the joint. You will find dark grease splattered in a distinctive circular pattern directly above the joint on the vehicle's underbody, exhaust pipes, or transfer case housing.

4. A High-Pitched Squeaking or Chirping Sound at Low Speeds

When a damaged boot allows all the lubricating grease to escape, dirt and water enter the bearing tracks. This leads to dry, metal-on-metal friction, creating a continuous high-pitched squeaking, chirping, or grinding noise that changes rhythm exactly with the speed of the vehicle.

5. Visible Play or Movement in the Shaft When Inspected

If you crawl under the vehicle (with the engine off and parking brake engaged) and grab the driveshaft near the transfer case, it should feel perfectly rigid. If you can physically shake, jiggle, or rotate the shaft independently of the mounting flange, the internal clearances are completely blown out, and the joint is at risk of snapping.
