DM generally refers to Horton's DM Advantage fan clutch family. It is commonly found on heavy-duty trucks and diesel engines.

  • Prevent engine overheating by providing strong airflow when temperatures rise.
  • Save fuel because the fan isn't constantly consuming engine power.
  • Maintain engine power by reducing the horsepower required to drive the fan.
  • Reduce noise when maximum cooling isn't needed.
  • Reduce wear on the fan, belts, bearings, and related components.
  • Improve cooling efficiency under heavy loads, during climbing, or in hot weather.

Signs of Faulty:

  1. Engine overheating
    • Temperature rises under heavy load, climbing hills, or in hot weather.
    • The fan doesn't speed up when the engine gets hot.
    • This is one of the most important warning signs.
  1. Fan stays engaged all the time
    • Loud fan roaring even when the engine is cold.
    • Fan runs at high speed unnecessarily.
    • Can cause poor fuel economy and reduced engine performance.
  1. Fan won't engage
    • Engine temperature gets high but the fan doesn't turn on properly.
    • You may not hear the normal increase in fan noise when the clutch is commanded on.
  1. Fan remains at low speed
    • Particularly relevant to a 2-speed DM clutch.
    • Fan operates, but doesn't switch to high speed when additional cooling is required.
  1. Air leaking from the clutch
    • You hear a hissing sound around the fan clutch.
    • Air pressure may drop when the clutch is activated.
    • Internal seals can also leak.
  1. Fan engages/disengages incorrectly
    • Fan repeatedly switches on and off.
    • Fan engages at the wrong temperature.
    • Fan doesn't respond properly to the vehicle's cooling demand.
  1. Excessive vibration or wobbling
    • Fan or clutch appears to wobble while running.
    • Could indicate worn bearings, damaged clutch components, or another fan-drive problem.
  1. Poor fuel economy
    • If the clutch is stuck engaged, the engine continually uses power to drive the fan.
