Description: Temperature Sensor
Condition: New
Brand: Cummins®
Part Number: 4010051

Vehicle Fitment 4010051:

Engine Compatibility: * Cummins ISC / ISL / L9: Used extensively in fire trucks, waste management vehicles, transit buses, and medium-duty freight trucks (e.g., Freightliner M2, Peterbilt 348).

A temperature sensor for Cummins 8.9L ISC/ISL engines 4010051 is a critical diagnostic component that monitors the heat of exhaust gases. This data is sent to the Engine Control Module (ECM) to regulate fuel injection and manage the aftertreatment system's health.

Function and Technical Overview The 8.9-liter ISC and ISL engines (often used in vocational trucks and buses) rely on Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensors to manage the "Regeneration" process. These sensors ensure the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) gets hot enough to burn off collected soot without overheating and cracking the internal ceramic substrate.

  • Location: Typically found in three positions: the inlet of the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst (DOC), the inlet of the DPF, and the outlet of the DPF.

  • Operating Principle: Most are thermistor-type or RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) sensors. As the exhaust temperature rises, the electrical resistance of the sensor changes, allowing the ECM to calculate the exact temperature.

Signs of Faulty 4010051:

Key Signs of a Faulty Temperature Sensor

  • Active Fault Codes: This is the most common sign. You will likely see Cummins codes such as FC1981, FC3168, or FC3315. These indicate that the temperature readings are either "out of range" or "static" (not changing as the engine warms up).

  • Forced Engine Derate: To protect the engine and the aftertreatment system from damage, the ECM may limit engine speed and torque. You will experience a significant loss of power, often referred to as "limp mode."

  • Regeneration Issues: The engine may be unable to start or complete a "Parked Regen." If the sensor sends incorrect data, the ECM won't allow the dosing of fuel into the exhaust to heat up the DPF, leading to rapid soot buildup.

  • Frequent Regeneration Requests: If a sensor "drifts" (gives a reading that is wrong but still within a plausible range), the system might think the DPF isn't getting hot enough and will constantly try to trigger a regeneration cycle.

  • Dashboard Warning Lights: You will typically see the Check Engine Light (CEL) or the High Exhaust System Temperature (HEST) lamp flashing or staying on at inappropriate times.
