A Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank is a storage tank on a modern diesel vehicle that holds DEF, a liquid used to reduce harmful emissions from the engine.

  • Stores DEF: Holds the DEF supply until it is needed.
  • Supplies the SCR system: Sends DEF to the pump and injector.
  • Reduces NOx emissions: DEF is injected into the exhaust, where the SCR system uses it to convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into primarily nitrogen and water.
  • Helps meet emissions regulations: Allows modern diesel engines to meet required emissions standards.
  • Provides enough DEF for operation: The tank gives the truck a reserve so DEF doesn't need to be added constantly.

Signs of Faulty:

  • DEF warning light or “DEF system fault” on the dashboard.
  • Low DEF level warning even when the tank has plenty of fluid.
  • DEF level doesn't change correctly after adding DEF.
  • DEF leaks around the tank, fittings, hoses, or connections.
  • Cracked, damaged, or swollen tank.
  • DEF freezes or crystallizes around the tank or connections. DEF can freeze in cold temperatures; this doesn't necessarily mean the tank is bad.
  • Incorrect DEF level readings caused by a faulty level/quality sensor inside the tank.
  • DEF quality warning even though the correct DEF was added.
  • Check-engine or emissions-system warning related to the DEF/SCR system.
  • The truck may eventually enter a power or speed limitation mode if the DEF system has a serious unresolved fault.
