A doser pump (also called a dosing pump or DEF pump in some systems) is a device that precisely delivers a measured amount of fluid into a process or system.

1. Emissions Control in Diesel Engines

In diesel trucks, buses, and heavy equipment, a doser pump is used in the SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system.

It:

  • Pumps Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) from the DEF tank.
  • Delivers the correct amount of DEF to the exhaust.
  • Helps convert harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water.
  • Enables the vehicle to meet emissions regulations.

Benefits:

  • Reduced emissions.
  • Compliance with environmental standards.
  • Improved engine operation.

2. Chemical Injection

In industrial and water-treatment systems, a doser pump:

  • Injects chemicals at precise rates.
  • Controls chemical concentration.
  • Prevents over- or under-dosing.

Common uses:

  • Water purification
  • Chlorination systems
  • pH control
  • Boiler and cooling tower treatment

3. Fuel and Additive Dosing

Some engines and industrial systems use doser pumps to:

  • Inject fuel additives.
  • Supply fuel for regeneration of emission-control devices such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs).
  • Improve combustion or system performance.

Signs of Faulty:

1. Check Engine Light or Warning Messages

  • Check engine light illuminates.
  • SCR, DEF, or emissions system warnings appear on the dashboard.
  • Diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are stored in the engine computer.

2. Engine Derate (Reduced Power)

  • The vehicle loses power.
  • Maximum speed may be limited.
  • The engine enters a protection mode due to emissions-system faults.

3. Increased Emissions

  • The SCR system cannot reduce NOx emissions properly.
  • The vehicle may fail an emissions test.

4. Abnormal DEF Consumption

  • DEF level drops unusually fast (over-dosing).
  • DEF level barely changes (under-dosing or no dosing).

5. Poor SCR Performance Faults

Common fault descriptions may include:

  • Low DEF pressure
  • DEF dosing malfunction
  • SCR efficiency below threshold
  • Dosing valve performance issues

6. Crystallized DEF Deposits

  • White crystal deposits around DEF lines, fittings, or the injector.
  • Can indicate leakage or improper dosing.

7. Difficulty Completing Regeneration

On some systems that use dosing for regeneration:

  • Regeneration fails or takes longer than normal.
  • DPF-related fault codes may appear.

8. Unusual Pump Noise

  • Pump runs excessively.
  • Clicking, grinding, or whining noises.
  • No pump operation when commanded by diagnostics.
