A coolant thermostat is a valve in a vehicle's engine cooling system that regulates the flow of engine coolant based on temperature. Its job is to help the engine reach and maintain its ideal operating temperature.

  • Helps the engine warm up quickly: When you start a cold engine, the thermostat stays closed so coolant remains in the engine. This allows the engine to reach its optimal operating temperature faster.
  • Prevents overheating: Once the engine reaches its designed temperature, the thermostat opens and allows coolant to flow through the radiator, where excess heat is removed.
  • Improves fuel efficiency: Engines run most efficiently at their normal operating temperature. A thermostat helps maintain that temperature, reducing fuel consumption.
  • Reduces engine wear: Cold engines experience more wear because the oil is thicker and doesn't lubricate as effectively. Faster warm-up helps reduce this wear.
  • Reduces emissions: Modern engines produce fewer harmful emissions when operating at their intended temperature.
  • Provides effective cabin heating: The vehicle's heater relies on hot engine coolant. A properly functioning thermostat helps the heater produce warm air sooner.

Signs of Faulty:

If the thermostat is stuck closed (more serious)

  • Engine overheats quickly.
  • Temperature gauge climbs into the red zone.
  • Coolant may boil over into the overflow tank.
  • Heater may stop blowing hot air, even when the engine is hot, because coolant isn't circulating properly.
  • You may see a high engine temperature warning light.

If the thermostat is stuck open

  • Engine takes a long time to warm up.
  • Temperature gauge stays below its normal operating range.
  • Poor cabin heat in cold weather.
  • Reduced fuel economy, because the engine stays cooler than intended.
  • The check engine light may come on with codes related to engine temperature (such as P0128 on many vehicles).

Other possible symptoms

  • Temperature gauge fluctuates unexpectedly.
  • Coolant leaks around the thermostat housing (if the housing or gasket has failed).
  • Engine performance may feel slightly off if the engine never reaches proper operating temperature.
