An air disc brake chamber is a component used in the braking system of heavy-duty trucks, buses, and trailers. Its job is to convert compressed air pressure into mechanical force that applies the disc brake.

  • Receives compressed air when the driver applies the brake.
  • Converts air pressure into movement using a diaphragm and pushrod.
  • Moves the disc-brake caliper.
  • The caliper presses the brake pads against the rotor.
  • This creates friction that slows or stops the vehicle.

Signs of Faulty:

  • Air leaking — You may hear a hissing sound around the brake chamber, especially when the brakes are applied.
  • Weak braking — The vehicle takes longer to stop or the brakes don't feel as strong as they normally do.
  • Brake not releasing properly — The brake can stay partially applied after you release the pedal, causing heat and premature pad/rotor wear.
  • Uneven braking — One wheel may brake harder or weaker than the others, causing the vehicle to pull to one side.
  • Slow brake response — The brake takes noticeably longer to apply or release.
  • Pushrod movement problems — The pushrod may move too little, too much, or not move smoothly when the brake is applied.
  • Damaged or cracked chamber — Physical damage, corrosion, or a damaged diaphragm can indicate failure.
  • Parking brake problems — On a combination spring/service chamber, a failure in the spring-brake section can affect parking or emergency braking.
