The 12 Volt Yaw-70x Rate Sensor is an OEM motion-sensing safety component designed for International / Navistar commercial trucks equipped with Bendix® Electronic Stability Program (ESP) active safety systems.

1. What is it?

Part is a dual-axis inertial motion sensor mounted on the vehicle frame rail. It continuously measures the truck's angular rotation rate around its vertical axis (yaw rate) and lateral acceleration (side-to-side force) to determine if the vehicle is spinning out, jackknifing, or in danger of rolling over.

2. Core Functions & Technical Features

  • Active Stability Control: Feeds real-time vehicle rotation and lateral force data directly to the Bendix® EC-60™ or EC-80™ ABS/ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

  • Rollover & Skidding Intervention: Allows the ESP system to compare driver steering intent against actual vehicle movement. If a discrepancy is detected, the ECU automatically applies specific individual wheel brakes and cuts engine throttle to prevent jackknifing or rollover events.

  • Solid-State MEMS Technology: Uses micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) accelerometers and gyroscopes for precise measurement and high resistance to chassis vibrations.

  • 12V Sealed Construction: Features a rugged, weatherproof housing and sealed multi-pin electrical connector designed to withstand frame rail road spray, dirt, and severe temperature fluctuations.

Signs of Faulty

1. Active ESP / ABS / Stability Warning Lights

  • Symptom: The dashboard ESP/ESC light, ABS light, or Traction Control indicator illuminates solid red or yellow during vehicle operation.

  • Cause: The ABS/ESP Electronic Control Unit (ECU) detects a loss of signal, out-of-range sensor readings, or communication fault from the 3901193C1 sensor across the data link.

2. Diagnostic Fault Codes (DTCs)

  • Symptom: Active or stored diagnostic trouble codes present when scanning the Bendix® EC-60™ or EC-80™ ECU with diagnostic software (e.g., Bendix® ACom®).

  • Common Fault Codes: Yaw Rate Sensor Signal Invalid, Lateral Acceleration Signal Out of Range, ESP Sensor CAN Communication Error, or Yaw Rate Sensor Uncalibrated.

3. False ESP / Automatic Brake Interventions

  • Symptom: Unexpected automatic engine throttle cut or sudden individual wheel braking during normal, gentle cornering on dry pavement.

  • Cause: The failing sensor sends false high-rotational or high-lateral force signals to the ECU, tricking the system into believing the truck is sliding or rolling over.

4. Loss of Stability & Roll Mitigation Functionality

  • Symptom: Full shutdown of Bendix® ESP features, leaving the truck operating strictly on basic hydraulic/pneumatic service braking without electronic stability backup.

  • Cause: The ECU enters a fail-safe mode and completely disengages stability interventions to prevent erroneous automatic braking.
