Vehicle Fitment

Part serves as an OEM replacement across a wide variety of residential split systems, heat pumps, and packaged AC units (typically rated at 3.25 Tons / 39,000 BTU capacity):
  • Compatible Brands: Carrier, Bryant, Payne, Trane, American Standard, Lennox, Rheem, Ruud, Goodman, Amana, and York.

  • System Types: Residential Air Conditioners, Air-Source Heat Pumps, and Packaged Roof-Top / Side-Discharge HVAC Units.

The Scroll HVAC Compressor is a residential and light commercial air conditioning compressor designed for system replacements utilizing R-410A refrigerant.

1. What is it?

Part is a 3.25–3.5 Ton (39,000 BTU/h) hermetic scroll compressor produced by Copeland (Emerson Climate Technologies). It serves as the primary "pump" in central split-system air conditioners, heat pumps, and packaged units, pressurizing R-410A refrigerant to drive the refrigeration cycle.

2. Integrated Features & Operational Breakdown

  • Scroll Technology: Features dual interleaved spiral scrolls for smooth, continuous compression, offering higher energy efficiency and lower vibration compared to older piston compressors.

  • Electrical Configuration (PFV Code): Operates on standard single-phase, 208/230-Volt power at 60Hz, typical for residential single-family homes and light commercial setups.

  • R-410A & POE Oil Pre-Charge: Factory-charged with Polyolester (POE) oil, formulated specifically for environmentally friendly HFC (R-410A) refrigerant systems.

  • Inherent Motor Protection: Includes internal thermal break protection to safeguard the motor windings against overheating and electrical overload.

Signs of Faulty

1. Poor Cooling or Inability to Reach Set Temperature

  • Symptoms: The outdoor condensing unit runs, but the indoor air vents discharge warm or lukewarm air.

  • Cause: Internal scroll wear, floating seal damage, or internal bypass failure prevents the compressor from creating a sufficient pressure differential between suction and discharge sides.

2. Breaker Tripping or Blown Fuses Upon Startup

  • Symptoms: The main HVAC circuit breaker trips instantly or within 1–3 seconds of the contactor pulling in.

  • Cause: Locked Rotor Amperage (LRA) due to mechanical seizure/binding, or shorted-to-ground motor windings inside the hermetic housing.

3. Hard Starting, Humming, or Short-Cycling

  • Symptoms: The unit hums loudly for a few seconds without starting, then shuts off on internal thermal overload. It may short-cycle frequently.

  • Cause: A weak dual-run capacitor, damaged compressor motor windings, or elevated head pressure forcing the motor past its running amperage limit.

4. Unusual Mechanical Noise (Rattling, Buzzing, Clunking)

  • Symptoms: Loud metallic grinding, loud rattling, or heavy clunking upon startup and shutdown.

  • Cause: Broken internal scroll sets, bearing wear, or liquid refrigerant floodback washing away protective POE oil lubrication.

5. Compressor Shell Overheating & Thermal Overload Trips

  • Symptoms: The compressor body becomes extremely hot to the touch, and the unit stops pumping completely until it cools down.

  • Cause: Low suction pressure (refrigerant leak), high superheat, or excessive compression ratios triggering the internal thermal protector to open.
